Sacred Mt. Kurama, birth place of REIKI (靈氣) : Kurama dera Temple and Kifune Shrine: Escape from the crowd of central Kyoto and explore the deep mountain in the North.

The spirit of REIKI 靈氣
Explore Mt. Kurama, the birthplace of REIKI(靈氣)

There are so many beautiful spots in Kyoto, but if you wish to visit more off-the-beaten-path in nature, this is the perfect course.  You will have a direct experience of the feeling of “kami”, Shinto deities, not in the shrine buildings, but in the elements of nature, such as trees, water, air, sun, earth, etc.

Highlights:

 ・Visit Kurama Dera Temple in Mt. Kurama, and feel the deep sacred nature.

 ・Take time to meditate on the mountaintop where Master Usui, the founder of REIKI meditated to receive the world-famous universal healing energy.

 ・Purify your mind, body, and spirit, and feel the deep interconnection with all beings.

・Learn the unique and universal Buddhist teachings of Kurama-Dera Temple.

・Visit Kifune jinja Shrine worshiping water kami from ancient times.

・Enjoy pure nature walks up and down Kurama mountain.

Kurama Temple

It is located in the middle of the mountain.  You can choose to go up either by cable car or on foot.

Kurama mountain itself is believed to be sacred since ancient times, and this is where Reiki, a world-famous energy healing style started.  The founder master Mikao Usui received Reiki after his 21-day fasting meditation on top of the mountain in 1922.

After passing the main gate, we will come across Yuki-Jinja Shrine with tall sacred old cedar trees. This Shrine is famous for its fire festival every October.

Kurama-dera Temple is apparently a Buddhist temple, but it is not.

The holy trinity of Universal energy (=Sonten 尊天)

Light =Sun

Love = Moon

Power = Earth

These three are represented by three Buddhist deities, but the idea and the basic cosmology are very Shinto-like and universal.
There are many secret sites at the temple that most people miss even the Japanese.

Along the path, we can find some beautiful wisdom poems written by a woman head priest, who recently passed away (July 2022)  at the age of 97.

"Everything had its place and purpose, and

the cycle of life produced a sense of reverence.

Like a net, all is interconnected and teaches us respect for others

and the need for coexistence. "

Kifune jinja Shrine

After meditating and resting at the top of the mountain's sacred spot, we will climb down the mountain to Kifune side.

Here is famous for its water worship, and we can drink the spring water from the mountain.
