The spirit of Water kami
Kurama Temple and Kurama dera Temple:

Escape from the crowd of central Kyoto and

explore the deep mountain in the North.

There are so many beautiful spots in Kyoto, but if you wish to visit more off-the-beaten-path in nature, this is the perfect course.  You will have a direct experience of the feeling of “kami”, Shinto deities, not in the shrine buildings, but in the elements of nature, such as trees, water, air, etc.

・Feel the deep sacred nature away from the crowded Kyoto.

 ・Visit Kurama Temple with many legends and power spots.

 ・Enjoy pure nature walks up and down Kurama mountain.

 ・Take time to meditate in the mountain forest

 ・Purify your mind and body and feel the coolness of the sacred sites.

It roughly takes about 1 hour by train and on foot to get to these sites from a train station in Kyoto city.

Kurama Temple

It is located on top of the hill (mountain) you can choose to go up either by cable car or on foot.

Kurama mountain itself is believed to be sacred, and this is where Reiki, a world-famous energy healing style started.  The founder Mikao Usui received the basics while on his long-term retreat here.

After passing the main gate, we will come across Yuki Jinja Shrine with tall sacred old trees

One of the power spots is located in front of the main shrine building.

Beauty and  the uniqueness of this temple is, its target of worship:

The holy trinity of Universal energy (=Sonten 尊天)

Light =Sun

Love = Moon

Power = Earth

These three are represented by three Buddhist deities, but the idea and the basic cosmology are very Shinto-like.

At Kurama Temp, we can find some wisdom poetry made by the head priest, a lively eighty-year-old woman.  You are lucky if you could meet her directly.

She speaks and writes about the preciousness of nature in the surrounding nature.

Everything had its place and purpose, and

the cycle of life produced a sense of reverence.

Like a net, all is interconnected and teaches us respect for others

and the need for coexistence.
